Every term, in plain language.

Vehicle protection has its own jargon. Here's what every word means - defined plainly, no legalese. If a term matters to your coverage, it's here.

A

Authorization

Claims

Precision Auto's approval of a covered repair before the shop proceeds. The shop diagnoses the issue, calls us, and we authorize the covered work.

C

Cancellation Window

Legal

The period after purchase when cancellation and refund terms are most favorable. The exact window and refund method are written in your contract.

Claims-paid Percentage

Claims

The share of submitted claims that are paid. An honest metric of an insurer's willingness to pay - Precision Auto will publish this audited once real data exists.

Covered Component

Parts

A specific part of your vehicle listed as covered under your chosen plan. What's covered depends on your tier - Powertrain, Preferred, or Comprehensive.

D

Deductible

Claims

The amount you pay per covered repair visit. The shop bills Precision Auto for the covered repair; you pay only your deductible directly to the shop.

Direct Payment

Claims

Precision Auto pays the repair shop directly for covered repairs. You don't front the bill and wait for reimbursement - you pay only your deductible.

Drivetrain

Parts

Axles, drive shafts, differentials, and CV joints that transfer power from the transmission to the wheels.

E

Exclusion

Legal

A component or situation explicitly NOT covered by your contract. Precision Auto publishes exclusions up front - wear items, cosmetic damage, pre-existing failures, routine maintenance, and non-breakdown damage.

I

Internally-lubricated Parts

Parts

Engine components that operate inside the oil-lubrication system - typically covered under powertrain plans.

L

Licensed Repair Shop

Claims

Any repair shop holding a valid state license to perform automotive repairs. Precision Auto lets you use any licensed shop in the country - your own mechanic included.

M

Manufacturer Warranty

VSC

A warranty included free with a new vehicle from the manufacturer, covering defects in materials or workmanship for a set period (e.g., 3 years / 36,000 miles). A VSC is separate from and supplements this after it ends.

Mechanical Breakdown Insurance (MBI)

Legal

In California, vehicle service contracts are regulated as Mechanical Breakdown Insurance - a form of insurance overseen by the state's Department of Insurance, with consumer protections specific to insurance products.

P

Powertrain

Parts

The components that generate and deliver power to the wheels: engine, transmission, drivetrain. The base tier of Precision Auto coverage.

Pre-existing Failure

Claims

A breakdown or failing condition that existed before your coverage started. Not covered - the waiting period helps confirm this.

Pro-rated Refund

Legal

A refund calculated based on the unused portion of your coverage, after the money-back window closes. Spelled out in your contract.

S

Sample Contract

VSC

A specimen version of the full contract, published for you to read before buying. Every section summarized in plain language - no buried clauses.

T

TCPA Consent

Legal

Consent under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act to be contacted by phone. Consent isn't required to buy - you can get a quote and estimate without it.

Transfer of Contract

Legal

The ability to transfer your coverage to a new owner when you sell the vehicle - can help resale value. Terms are in your contract.

V

Vehicle Service Contract (VSC)

VSC

A contract you purchase that pays for covered mechanical breakdowns after your factory warranty ends. Not insurance and not a manufacturer warranty. Sometimes called an 'extended warranty,' but legally distinct.

W

Waiting Period

VSC

A short window after purchase before claims can be filed (e.g., 30 days / 1,000 miles). Prevents pre-existing failures from being claimed and keeps prices honest.

Wear-and-tear Item

Parts

Parts that degrade with normal use and require routine replacement - brake pads, tires, wiper blades, belts, hoses. Not covered by a VSC.
